Lighting Selection & Shopping Guide
Choose lighting by starting with what you need to see, then considering the atmosphere you want to create. This guide helps you compare fixture types, measure your space and check the details that matter before ordering.
Choose lighting by room and activity
- Dining: start with the table dimensions, ceiling height and seated sightlines. Browse pendant lights.
- Living room: combine general light with a local lamp beside a chair or sofa. Browse floor lamps.
- Bedside or desk: compare the shade height, available surface area and where light falls. Browse table lamps.
- Small spaces: wall-mounted lighting can free up furniture surfaces; check wiring and projection from the wall. Browse wall lights.
For a room-by-room example, read our layered lighting and materials guide. A decorative fixture is not automatically suitable for reading or detailed work.
Compare these specifications before choosing a lamp
- Dimensions and clearance
- Measure the fixture, its base or ceiling plate, and its installed height. Check doors, circulation routes and nearby furniture. For approximate conversion, divide millimeters by 25.4 to obtain inches.
- Light output and direction
- Compare stated lumens, beam direction and shade construction. Wattage describes power consumption; it does not by itself tell you how well a lamp lights your task.
- Color temperature and controls
- Check the specified color temperature, whether it can be changed, and whether dimming is supported. An adjustable arm does not imply an electronically dimmable light.
- Materials and finish
- Read the stated base material and finish separately. Compare close-up images rather than judging material solely from a room rendering.
- Installation and servicing
- Confirm mounting, electrical supply, included components and whether the light source or driver can be replaced.
Buying lighting for a US home: your pre-order checklist
Compatibility is model-specific. A worldwide shipping offer does not mean every fixture is supplied in a US-compatible electrical configuration.
- Ask for the exact input voltage and frequency of the supplied fixture or adapter. Do not assume a product described only as 220 V is suitable for your installation.
- Confirm the supplied plug for a plug-in lamp, or the ceiling plate, mounting hardware and junction-box compatibility for a hardwired fixture.
- Request any certification documentation needed for your project and verify that it covers the exact model. Do not infer whole-fixture certification from a certified component.
- If dimming matters, confirm the driver and compatible control method before buying a dimmer.
- Ask your qualified installer to review the specification and installation instructions before ordering a hardwired light.
- Confirm the selected configuration, production time, shipping time and return arrangements in writing.
Send us the product name, destination and installation requirements if any detail is missing. We will review the requested configuration before you order; an enquiry is not a guarantee of compatibility.
How to choose a pendant light for your dining table
Measure the table length and width, ceiling height and position of the electrical connection. A pendant should work with the table and seated views, not just look balanced in an empty room.
- Compare shape: consider a linear fixture along a rectangular table or a compact form over a round table. Use the actual fixture dimensions to check the visual relationship.
- Mock up the size: mark the footprint on paper or use a lightweight cardboard outline. Check it from the doorway and from seated positions.
- Check suspension: confirm the available drop and adjustment range. A fixture dimension is not necessarily its total installed height.
- Plan the light: check the beam and diffuser. A sculptural pendant may need additional lighting for the rest of the room.
- Review installation: agree the final position and height with your installer, allowing for ceiling construction, sightlines and the manufacturer’s instructions.
